Bats Were Getting Into this House in Marietta, Georgia

There is a tapered gap about an inch on its wide end between the roof soffit and the exterior brick wall

See that gap between the soffit and the brick work? So did the bats. It's hard to say whether it's always been there or not, but my hunch would be that it opened up when the roof started to sag. As the peak sags down, it sometimes opens up that sort of gap as the rafters push out toward the eaves.
