Roof rats are more than happy to use whatever entry gaps they find. But when they can't find one, they go old-school and make one. Like all rodents, they're endowed with sharp teeth and powerful jaws that can gnaw through wood and most other building materials.

Also note that this is not a freshly-gnawed hole. The rats have been in the attic of this house in Roswell since at least last year.
