Cicada killer wasp in a lawn in Atlanta
Cicada killers are large wasps that are late spring to summer pests. They paralyze cicadas, drag them into nests in the soil, and lay eggs on their bodies. When the eggs hatch, they eat the cicadas.
Female cicada killers have stingers, but are not aggressive. Male cicada killers are aggressive and territorial, but have no stingers.
Other than making unsightly holes in the lawn, cicada killers are basically harmless. The chances of being stung by one are quite small unless you do something rude like stick your finger in a nest hole. They can, however, become very numerous over time and cause annoyance to people who want to use the lawn. They're especially obnoxious pests on gold courses and other recreation fields.
