Bat Bugs in the Attic of a House in Atlanta

Bat bugs are so similar to bed bugs that you have to be an entomologist to tell them apart (and it's a challenge even for them). The most reliable distinguishing factor is that bat bugs prefer feeding on bat blood, and are therefore usually found where bats are.

The thing is that if the bats are removed, the bat bugs will slum it and feed on human blood rather than starving to death. Once they migrate into the living area of the house, they become just as big a nuisance and are just as difficult to remove as bed bugs.

In addition, while bed bugs are not known to transmit human diseases, there's less information available about whether bat bugs can. That's why it's important to treat any sign of a bat bug problem as part of a bat-removal job. The bat bugs in this picture were found during a bat-removal job at a house in Atlanta.
