Squirrel Stairway into the Attic of a House in Carrollton, Georgia

Squirrel stairway at a house in Carrollton

This is a very common way for squirrels to get up and down the sides of houses. Although more brazen than most rodents, they're still prey for canines, cats, and birds of prey; so when they have a nice, protected way to get up to and down from the attic of a house, they gladly make use of it, as they did at this house in Carrollton, Georgia.

What made it easy for the squirrels was the insulated air-conditioning refrigerant line inside the downspout. The inside of the metal downspout would have been more difficult for the squirrels to climb (though still possible). The insulation made it much easier by giving them a better gripping surface for their claws.
