Carpenter Bee Stains on a House in Johns Creek, Georgia

Waxy splattered stains from carpenter bee holes on the wooden trim and stone wall of a house in Johns Creek Georgia

Carpenter bee stains on a house in Johns Creek

When carpenter bees drill into wood, they make sawdust underneath. When the bees emerge from the wood, they cause a mixture of wax, fecal material and sawdust to fall out, which creates unsightly stains like these ones on the outside of a house in Johns Creek, Georgia.

The stains are hard to remove and to paint over because the wax interferes with the adhesion of the paint. Cleaning them off using a solvent like alcohol, and then priming them with an oil-based exterior primer, is usually the only way to get new paint to stick well. Traces of wax will repel most latex-based paints, causing them to bubble and peel.
