Why This House in Atlanta had a Mouse Problem for Ten Years

Gaps between the top and side edges of a wooden crawl space door and its frame allowed mice into a house in Atlanta.

Mouse gap through a crawl space door in Atlanta

This house was being treated for mice by an exterminator for ten years before the homeowner got tired of paying the company to not eliminate the mouse problem.

The reason for the long failure is obvious: The exterminator never thought to replace that crawl space door with one that fit properly and would keep mice out of the house.

This isn't unusual. A lot of exterminators believe that it's impossible to seal mice out of a house without using pesticides. It's not. We do it every day. But it's very detailed, painstaking work. Mice are tiny animals that can get through tiny gaps; and finding and sealing all those gaps is hard work.

This story has a happy ending: We sent a crew to non-chemically catch and remove the existing mice; and to replace that door and seal any other gaps they found to make this house in Atlanta mouse-proof.

And they all lived happily ever after. Except for the mice. They were kind of bummed.
