Mice are much better climbers than most folks realize. Think about it: Mice can't fly, and yet we find them in the attic all the time. Mice climbed up an insulated air-conditioning pipe to get to the rain gutter, and from there squeezed through this construction gap in the edge of the roof to get into the attic of this house in Dunwoody, Georgia.
