What happened here was that the flapper valve on the clothes dryer vent got stuck in the open position, which allowed Norway rats to climb up into the duct and into the basement of this house in Macon, Georgia.

Our non-chemical rat control approach to this problem consists of replacing the dryer duct with a rodent-resistant one, replacing the flexible part of the duct, and using trapping and removal to treat the existing rat infestation.

Believe it or not, this situation could have been a lot worse. There's an impeller-type fan inside the dryer where the exhaust hose attaches. Had the rats gotten into it while the dryer was being used, it would have made a terrible mess that could have damaged the dryer. At a minimum, it would have been no fun to clean the bits of macerated rat from the impeller fan. (Don't ask me how I know.)
