This is the time of year when young male raccoons who left the nest last fall, as well as female raccoons that spent their first winters with their mothers, begin living on their own in the big, outside world. We get a lot of raccoon control calls this time of year.
Raccoons can be very ornery animals. They're very strong and fight fiercely. They also are susceptible to rabies. Don't attempt to handle them on your own, no matter how tame they look.
